Sponsoring trainee doctors in developing countries
IMET2000 is introducing a new scheme called the Medic to Medic Programme, headed by Dr Kate Mandeville. This will be piloted in Malawi but could be rolled out in any country worldwide.
The UK has 230 doctors per 100,000 people. Malawi has only 2 doctors per 100,000 people. Help us support trainee doctors in developing countries.
A new scheme
The lack of trained doctors in developing countries is obstructing the delivery of basic healthcare.
In Malawi, most families cannot afford the tuition fees for medical school. Those who do make it spend valuable study time looking for funding. Many students drop out, even in final clinical years, from lack of money.
The Medic to Medic programme is a new initiative in which British doctors and medical students sponsor Malawian medical students.
In return, there are:
- Regular email updates
- Elective opportunities
- Teaching slots
How it works
A group of students is selected on the basis of their needs and academic potential. Through your sponsorship, we pay the tuition fees for these students for a full year.
In return, you will receive regular email updates of their progress and a newsletter. If you would like to write to any of the students individually, we welcome this.
Electives in Malawi can be arranged through your student partner in one of the main hospitals. The Malawi College of Medicine always needs volunteers for blocks of pre-clinical and clinical teaching. These can be arranged during summer holidays.
More information
Our website www.medictomedic.org.uk contains further information on the Medic to Medic programme and how you can support us.
If you would like to sponsor a medical student by making a regular donation by direct debit, please download our form here
.
Our donations are pooled in order to fund the entire group, so no individual students will suffer if you need to withdraw your sponsorship. However, please be aware that we need to guarantee tuition fees for our students for one academic year. If you feel you can't commit for this period, please consider making a one-off donation instead.
If you would like to make a one-off donation by credit card, please download our form here
